Winter Safety Tips

Winter can be especially tough on animals and  their shelters.  Check water sources daily.  Heated dishes work wonderfully and make caretaking so much easier.

Electric fences that are typically at the shoulder height of large animals may have become too short for effective use this winter.  Adjust as needed.

Be prepared for the potential of a fast snow melt and make provisions for your animals if you live in a low-lying or flood prone area.

Take care of yourself.  Your animals depend on you!

Think Spring!

What will your animals do in a disaster?

An important function of CAMBRIA CART is to educate the public on emergency preparedness.  Animals are particularly vulnerable during a disaster because they rely on us for help.  In 1999 Hurricane Floyd claimed the lives of millions of animals in North Carolina and thousands more were separated from their owners.  More recently, we remember the devastation that Hurricane Katrina brought to many.  People were forced to make difficult decisions.  Some chose to remain with their pets putting themselves in certain danger.  Some left their animals at home with access to food and water.  Others chose to let their animals free so they could hopefully escape to safer locations.  Many of those lives could have been saved by a coordinated response plan to address the needs of the people and animals.

When a disaster occurs, Cambria County Emergency Management Center will activate CAMBRIA CART if animal assistance is needed.  CART responds to disasters related to agricultural and companion animals.
